Bench Dedication
Sept. 20, 2002

Sandy took many photos.  We show here just a few.

In the fall of 2001, the club donated $500 to the Friends of the W & OD Trail for a bench to be installed along the W & OD Trail.  Paul McCray, the Northern VA Regional Park Authority Manager of the W &OD Trail, had it installed at a fabulous site right behind the new fire station on Lee Highway and Washington Blvd.

Today, we held a little dedication ceremony for the bench, thanking Paul and the Friends for their great program.

In the next two weeks the Friends of the W & OD Trail will be planting a butterfly garden there.  More landscaping will be added along the area in the coming months.

The plaque on the new bench

About 26 of us rode today.

Peggy (yellow shirt) thanks Paul and the "Friends of the W & OD" for making it so easy for the Babes to show their appreciation for the park.  Then Beth (red shirt) leads a toast.  Sue S. and her husband Jack furnish the champagne and some non-alcoholic brew!

Paul McCray expresses his appreciation to the Babes on Bikes for their donation of the bench.  Captain Tom Polera and members of the Arlington Fire Station #6 located directly behind the bench are key players in improving this area of the W & OD Trail.

To complete the dedication, we toss bird seed on the bench!
A group pic.

Sue and Jack then host a magnificent lunch.

Is Sue going to actually use that huge wine glass?

We then share our views on what the Babes on Bikes has meant to us, recording it all on a tape Lisa brought.   Another book in the making?  Lisa (in yellow helmet in group pic) co-authored Running Toward Danger:  Stories Behind the Breaking News of 9/11.

Helga, when not hiking all over the world, joins us from Vienna, VA.
Glen, Joan, Marla, and Beth listen intently to Nancy F.'s story.  Nancy is the usual leader of Monday's Hill Ride.

Cynthia recently joined
the Babes

Robin shares some poignant memories of what prompted her to join the group.  Her family now rides as a team, calling themselves the Winking Lizards.
