The Burke Babes are made up of a core of five riders, four of them from the West Springfield/Fairfax Station area (Loretta, Margie, Karen and Joni) and one from Round Hill (Cathy). This will be our third year together and it is amazing how that time has flown by. Our basic philosophy is that we want to ride whenever and wherever we can. Our goal is to do two local rides a week and one “event” ride a month. Our “local” rides vary from 25 to 42 miles. From April until October, we try to find one longer ride each month that is within a good driving distance and one organized ride that is at least a metric century. The group is also a fan of “Scott and Jim’s Favorite Bike Rides” and we have had some wonderful rides in the “Plains” region of Virginia although there are times that we think of it as the “Hills” region.
Our average speed is 13-15 mph and this Fall we started riding trails which is a lot of fun. We are currently putting together plans to ride the GAP trail from outside Pittsburgh to Cumberland and then from Cumberland to Georgetown. We ride at odd times so that we can accommodate our often wacky schedules. Every Spring we promise ourselves that we will set up a routine and stick to a schedule but when that gets stressful we adapt and make it work for the group. We welcome all riders if they can deal with an often “flexible” schedule.
